Nearby Calvert Cliffs is one of the largest fossil-bearing deposits of Miocene marine sediments exposed on the east coast. The cliffs extend for thirty miles. Visitors may hunt for fossils on the open beach area of the state park and keep what they find. Because of the constant erosion of the cliffs, access to the cliffs is no longer permitted.
